Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic cemented over the tops of your teeth to change their color and shape. The team at C & R Dental Care often recommends them to people with teeth that have uneven surfaces, or that are chipped, discolored, oddly shaped, unevenly spaced, or crooked. They can mask defects caused by medication, injury, or discolored fillings in front teeth – defects that teeth whitening cannot affect. Veneers are customized to match your natural bite, mouth shape, and tooth shade.

Why are veneers a good option?

Veneers can correct a lot of smile imperfections. Advantages of veneers include:

  • A natural tooth appearance
  • Usually well-accepted by your gum tissue
  • Stain-resistant
  • Whitens darkened teeth
  • A conservative alternative to crowns

How are veneers placed?

Veneers are a permanent solution to an imperfect smile. They have a long life expectancy – between seven and 15 years – and are highly resistant to staining from coffee, tea, and tobacco. The first step in getting veneers is a smile consultation with the cosmetic dentists at C & R Dental Care. This helps them understand your goals and can even help you envision your new smile with veneers.

To place veneers, the dental team files down a small portion of your existing teeth to allow for the addition of the thin veneers, which are usually about the thickness of a contact lens, or half a millimeter. The team also takes an impression of your teeth to send to a laboratory for the creation of the veneers.

At the next visit, the dental team places the veneers on the tooth surface to check their fit and match the shade. Once customized, they’ll be bonded to your teeth permanently.

How do you care for veneers?

You may need a couple of weeks to become accustomed to the veneers. Discuss any concerns you have about their appearance or placement at a follow-up visit that’s usually scheduled one to two weeks following their placement. You will notice your teeth have a different feel, in terms of size and shape. Veneers require good oral hygiene habits, including daily flossing, brushing after meals, and regular specialized dental cleanings.
